About GeoLan 3D

Three-dimensional digital data has revolutionised how we document, analyse and explore historic landscapes, buildings and cultural collections.

From landscape scale lidar surveys to photogrammetric recording of buildings and artefacts the third dimension brings heritage to life.

GeoLan Services

GeoLan3D is a North Yorkshire-based consultancy led by remote sensing specialist Keith Challis.  We provide remote sensing, digital documentation and visualisation services to the heritage industry.

Remote Sensing

Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) provides high-resolution three-dimensional landscape scale terrain data with the unique ability to map archaeology beneath the vegetation canopy. Freely available for most of England, Wales and large parts of Scotland, the use of lidar has revolutionised archaeological prospection and geoarchaeological studies.

We can help you identify the lidar available for your area of interest, process the data using a wide range of visualisation and analytical techniques and provide GIS-ready output for your systems, publication quality graphics, analytical reports and HER-ready interpretations.  In addition, we can provide 3D visualisation and modelling, geoarchaeological analysis of lidar data, vegetation mapping and modelling and woodland biomass modelling.

Working with third-party suppliers we can help you specify and commission bespoke lidar surveys.

Airborne multispectral imaging captures light across the visible spectrum and infrared in multiple discrete wavebands.

Usually at 1m spatial resolution multispectral imagery is particularly suited to geoarchaeological applications in coastal and river landscapes.

We can help you identify and process existing data or, working with third-party suppliers, specify and commission bespoke surveys.

Satellite observation
provides medium-resolution imaging of large areas at a high repeat frequency.
Freely available Sentinel imagery can reveal land use, vegetation and soil moisture, useful for landscape-scale studies.

Sub-metre resolution commercial imagery may be suitable for direct imaging of archaeological sites and features.

Visualisation

We work with state-of-the-art open-source software to generate high-quality landscape visualisations from your data, unlocking the details of cultural landscapes through sophisticated image processing. Using computer game technology, we can generate dramatic 3D visualisations or immersive first-person experiences.

Photogrammetry

3D models of small objects and archaeological artefacts can be created using digital photogrammetry or our infrared digital scanner.  We offer an on-site service for digitising objects in collections if required.

Our architectural models are generated using high-quality digital photogrammetry. We can supply models in digital formats suitable for rendering in Maya, 3D Studio, Blender, and similar software.
